Leno or Conan? |
Lead | |
|
I'm just curious about who thinks the best host is for the Tonight Show? I am a Letterman fan myself, so I'm considering myself unbiased. I do believe
what they are doing to Conan is a bit unfair, but I'm not going to spend a minute feeling bad for a guy that is going to get 45Million dollars to do
nothing until September....that's a mere 8 months away....not like 20 years!

Why don't they take some of that money and give us GL and ATWT?
How many of us stay up that late? |

Conan makes his Exit from NBC and goes straight to the Bank!!!! | ||
Conan O'Brien reaches $45M exit dealNBC said Thursday it has reached a $45 million deal with Conan O'Brien for his exit from the "Tonight" show, allowing Jay Leno to return to the late-night program he hosted for 17 years.Under the deal, which came seven months after O'Brien took the reins from Leno, O'Brien will get more than $33 million, NBC said. The rest will go to his 200-strong staff in severance, the network said in an announcement on the "Today" show. His final show will be Friday, with Tom Hanks scheduled to appear as well as Will Ferrell - the first guest O'Brien welcomed as "Tonight" host last June - and musical guest Neil Young. Leno will return to "Tonight" on March 1. "In the end, Conan was appreciative of the steps NBC made to take care of his staff and crew, and decided to supplement the severance they were getting out of his own pocket," his manager, Gavin Polone, told The Wall Street Journal. "Now he just wants to get back on the air as quickly as possible." O'Brien will be free to begin another TV job as soon as September, NBC said. There has been speculation on where he might go next. ABC (which airs "Night line" and "Jimmy Kimmel Live!") has said it wasn't interested, while Fox, which lacks a network late-night show, expressed appreciation for his show - but nothing more. Comedy Central has also been mentioned. A spokesman for O'Brien said he would be unavailable for comment. O'Brien landed the "Tonight" show after successfully hosting "Late Night," which airs an hour later, since 1993. But he quickly stumbled in the ratings race against his CBS rival, David Letterman. Under Leno, the "Tonight" show was the ratings champ at 11:35 p.m. Eastern, but he proved an instant flop with his experiment in prime time.

I'm with Leno. Conan is too silly for me and not really funny. I think Jay was being the good guy in all this, yet portrayed as the bad guy. NBC
executives were the ones that screwed up. They were the ones that took a #1 show and put in another host. I lost respect for Letterman a long time ago. I
admit I do record him if he has on a guest I want to see, but that's all. If Conan can't live on 45 million, than somethings wrong with him.

This really has nothing to do with Conan being able to "live" off of 45 mil. The money is basically a severance package, based on his contract with
NBC. No different than what any star, soap, movie, TV, CEO or sports, gets when their "boss" wants them gone. Secondly 12 mil is going to his staff
and the article also says he is making up the difference to them out of his own pocket. Pretty nice, impo. If we are looking at it that way, quite frankly, as
far as being able to "live off" something, which based on lifestyle, is actually relevant, Leno has been working long enough that he should be more
than comfortable for the rest of his life, if he gets into a jam, just sell off one of his majorly expensive cars in his garage/stable.
IMO NBC made a bad decision in '04 by promising Conan the job when they already had a emcee/show that could compete with Letterman in Leno. Our "reality/shock/Law and Order" viewing audience is obviously NOT ready for a prime time variety/talk show (aren't there enough on daytime?) or Leno would have carried his audience to that earlier time. I really could care less as I don't regularly watch any of them, BUT, that said, I'd tune in Letterman, Conan and Leno, in that order. I love Letterman, lol! |

I'm a Letterman gal myself. I rarely watch NBC for anything, but the few times off and on that I've caught Leno or Conan, I wasn't impressed with
either. If I *had* to choose, I'd say Leno I guess. I do feel that NBC shouldn't have promised Conan anything until they saw how Leno would do in prime
time.

I don't stay up late enough to have watched the late shows now or in the past. I have seen a live Leno taping in the past and in June got to see a live
Craig Ferguson taping. All I have to say about those is the laughing and clapping are forced. They make you clap like crazy and tell you to laugh as much as
possible. It's kind of ridiculous. Anyway, I think Leno should retire. Since he's been on at 9pm in my region, I have been known to call him "my
Ambien" since he puts me to sleep. Why don't either of those yahoo's (Leno and Conan) donate some of their cash to Haiti and make a difference in
the world instead of bickering at each other over something that clearly did not work out. Does Leno really think he'll do better back in his old time
slot? Give it up DUDE!

I don't think there has been anyone funny on late night since Arsenio Hall's show went off the air. I would rather watch paint dry than watch
Letterman. The ONLY thing I find funny on his show is the top 10 list. I think NBC is doing Conan dirty as they are essentially saying that Leno is their
"guy" and he will always get the premium spot at Conan's expense. I don't find either of them funny. But I don't stay up late anyway.

I'm a Letterman girl. However, since the Bush stuff I don't watch his monologues..only the guests. LOL I like Conan, but don't really get his
comedy. I don't like Leno since he pretty much stabbed Letterman in the back to get the to night show. I don't like NBC for choosing Leno over
Letterman even though Johnny Carson said he wanted Letterman to replace him. Whatever..I know it was a long time ago, but I've never gotten over that, so I
never watched Leno except 2 times..when Jerry Seinfeld was on there. LOL

I am with Ms M, on almost all of what she said.
Leno really bugs me. His style, his persona, what-have-you. I have personally loathed Letterman for the longest of times, but think that he ought to have got Johnny's show based on what was happening at the time. Conan is not really my style. I am more the Craig Ferguson type, but I am in love with the Daily Show with Jon Stewart - there goes my heart for comedic commentary, when I am not laughing at my husband's jokes |

Have to go with Conan as he was promised the show. He and his wife were boarding their horse at my daughter's farm in Ct., until they relocated to LA. They still have a house here so maybe they will move back permanently.
