This is how I wished it would have happened.....
Reva tossed and turned in the bed, the sheets tangled around her body, her hair damp with sweat, causing it to cling to her face. The moonlight poured in as Josh turned to her, taking her in his arms, and calling her name. He shook her gently and her eyes fluttered open. Reva sat up, her breathing short and she looked to him. Josh sat up beside her in bed, his face a shadow of concern.
"Reva, are you ok?" His voice was laced with worry. Revas eyes were large and her body shook as she stared at him.
"I had the craziest dream. It was so real, so vivid." Reva gasped struggling to catch her breath. Josh pulled her to him, laying her head on his warm, hard chest.
"Tell me about the dream. It might help if you talk about it." Josh urged her.
"So many things happened. I was told I had breast cancer, but I didnt tell you, I just left, I left to get treatment and didnt tell you, because I wanted you to finish the Veterans Hospital, I came home, and, you and Cassie were together." Reva closed her eyes against the pain she felt at just that statement. She felt Josh hold her tighter.
"Cassie and I together how?" Josh asked.
"A couple, you were in love, and I was dying." Revas tears came fast as she pulled from him, looking into his eyes, needing his comfort from this terrible dream.
"Reva, it was just a dream. It's over now." Josh reached out and brushed her tears away and smiled at her.
"There's more, so much more. You were angry with me for leaving you, you wanted Cassie, I tried to tell you about the cancer, to explain why I did what I did, but you wouldnt listen. Billy wanted to marry me, so that I could die as his wife, but I had only wanted you, through it all, only you." Reva was sobbing now and Josh tried to pull her to him but she resisted.
"Reva, there are a lot of problems with that dream of yours. For one thing, if you had cancer, I don't believe for a minute that you would hide something so important from me. We would handle it together, projects can wait, and I'd be there for you. And secondly, Cassie and I together as a couple would never happen. She's your sister, and although she is great, I could never love her like I love you. She's like a sister to me. Third, I'd kill Billy." Josh chuckled trying desperately to lighten the mood but the look on Reva's face tore at his heart. "Please, Darlin, calm down. You're shaking. Lets lay back down and try and get some sleep ok?" Josh moved closer to her and slowly pulled her down onto him, her head nestled on his shoulder, his arms protectively around her.
"What if I wake up and this is all just a dream? What if I close my eyes and I wake up and you're gone, you're with Cassie and I'm all alone? I don't want to go to sleep." Reva's vision was blurred as she wiped her tears away, holding on to Josh for dear life.
"Reva, you're awake right now. I'm here to keep you safe. You have to trust me on this ok?" Josh stared down at her and he could feel her body tense. "Do you trust me Reva?"
Reva did not reply to his question, instead she whispered softly to him, "Tell me you love me Joshua, in case this is the dream, just so I can hear you say it one more time." Reva's voice was trailing off, Josh could tell her eyelids were getting heavy as he tenderly stroked her arm and her back in a soothing motion. She felt so safe and warm, and she did trust him, loved him more than life itself and so her breathing became even and she lay there listening to the sweet sound of his voice as sleep beckoned her.
"I love you Reva. I always have, and I always will. That was just a nightmare sweetheart. You're my dream, a dream come true. The sweetest dream I've ever known and I get to hold you for the rest of my life. What man in their right mind would give that up? So close your eyes and go to sleep. I'll be here when you wake up, always Reva." Josh whispered in the night, his tone loving and soft.
"Always Bud." Reva's voice was barely audible as sleep took her. Reva dreamed of Josh, out in the sunlight, their wedding day, him all in white waiting there for her with that smile of his as he helped her from the boat. She could feel his kiss, warm and deep, so loving and passionate on her lips and her eyes opened to the bright light streaming into their bedroom window. She sat up in a panic and looked over. Josh lay beside her; his smile as bright and warm as the sunlight of the day.
"It was just a nightmare." Her statement came as a ragged breath and she closed her eyes then blinked a few times to clear her head, letting reality sink in.
"I told you Reva, and don't ever forget it, that I'll always be here for you." Josh smiled, taking her hand and Reva sighed as she lay down beside him in their bed, molding her body to his, cherishing the feel of his arms around her and she felt happy, so very happy that she and Josh had another beautiful day to share together. Reva closed her eyes and smiled to herself, everything was right with the world and life couldn't be better.
