`Closer' Foe

``The Closer'' star Kyra Sedgwick will have a new antagonist when the TV crime drama returns for a fourth season.

Soap-opera actor Stephen Martines will have a recurring role as a Hispanic news reporter who asks tough questions about how Sedgwick's police interrogator, Brenda Leigh Johnson, and her Los Angeles Police Department colleagues do their jobs.

The character played by Martines, whose credits include ``The Guiding Light'' and ``General Hospital,'' reflects an attempt to keep up with changing U.S. demographics, series creator James Duff said in an interview.

``You have some older white people and a lot of young minorities,'' Duff said. ``The audience looks for itself in these stories. They look for someone who articulates their point of view.''

New episodes of ``The Closer'' start July 14 on TNT. The show follows a unit that investigates high-profile murders. Sedgwick's Johnson is a quirky Southerner whose work is sometimes impeded by the department's male-dominated culture.

Too bad that Guiding Light cannot remember the wisdom of "The audience looks for itself in these stories. They look for someone who articulates their point of view. ...''
